China Presses Grieving Parents to Take Hush Money - NYTimes.com
Honestly, what can the world expect from the last communist powerhouse. China is all about development and growing and if for some reason there are people who might draw light on it’s corruption during this growth spurt, it is no surprise that the Communist government in charge will want to quiet it as fast as possible, especially since the Olympic games are starting up in a few weeks on 8.8.08.
Is it right for the Chinese government to be trying to hush up critiques by it’s people? No, it’s not, but it’s been widely know that this is what China does (as well as other questionable acts). Even though China has pledged a “new era of openness,” I doubt it will actually happen.
Chinese officials had promised a new era of openness in the wake of the earthquake and in the months before the Olympic Games, which begin in August. But the pressure on parents is one sign that officials here are determined to create a facade of public harmony rather than undertake any real inquiry into accusations that corruption or negligence contributed to the high death toll in the quake.
